The SolaRoad In the Netherlands is the World's First Solar Road

SolaRoad is a road -- developed by a company of the same name -- that has made history by becoming the world's first solar road, capable of converting sunlight into energy. The road, which is geared towards cyclists, welcomed commuters for the first time on Wednesday. It is 230 feet long and located in the town of Krommenie just outside Amsterdam.

The SolaRoad path is made of concrete modules fitted with solar cells and sheathed in a very thin layer of tempered glass. It is capable of harnessing energy that can be used to power street lights, traffic lights and even households.

This first road is essentially a test route. Further testing will be carried out over a period of three years in order to inform the development and construction of more solar roads.
