While most can't imagine a plane flying without fuel, the Solar Impulse 2 just embarked on a mission to change minds and possibly the future of air travel. Led by Solar Impulse founders André Borschberg and Bertrand Piccard, the jet has now started its five-month journey around the world beginning and ending in the UAE.
Despite there being no fuel involved, the plane will rely only on solar power, resulting in a flight that's unbelievably clean. Although the pilots have only been preparing with simulations, they are confident that the Solar Impulse 2 and those on the aircraft will make the trip unscathed. Rest and maintenance time will be set aside, but this isn't to say that the trip will be easy—the pilots are huddled together in a small cockpit with all of their supplies, surely a test that requires great patience and perseverance.
Considering that this initiative is part of the Future is Clean campaign, which is backed by big companies and renowned individuals, there could be huge implications for the future of green air travel and clean energy.
