Canadian phone brand Alcatel has found a way to create multifunctional smartphone packaging that remains useful after the mobile device has been unwrapped by creating a design that doubles up as a virtual reality headset. This promotes the use of virtual reality technology by offering consumers purchasing the smartphone a free headset that can be used in conjunction with the device.
The headset will be simple and minimal in design as the device will make use of the existing smartphone packaging. The headset will be made of cardboard with a slot for the Android phone to slip into along with two lenses and a single button for functionality. The boxed shape of the wrapping makes an ideal casing for the headset.
The design transitions packaging that would otherwise be thrown out into a viable secondary product that works as an accessory to the device.
