Lost Hiker-Tracking Drones

New Drone Technology Could Aid in Search and Rescue Missions

Being that search and rescue missions are time-sensitive to ensure that all parties are located safe and sound, new drone technology is now coming to light to help aid rescuers.

Developed by a team of researchers from the University of Zurich, NCCR Robotics and Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence, the drone technology enables drones to follow man-made tracks and trails.

The software was fed 20,000 images of different trail varieties to help the system understand what could and could not lead to a lost hiker. The testing has resulted in the drones being able to correctly identify the correct path 85% of the time, which is welcome news to those that operate search and rescue missions.

The new drone technology software could help to increase the efficiency of rescue missions in the near future.
