The SeaRay Wave-Driven Power Generator Launched in the Puget Sound

The SeaRay wave-driven power generator uses a direct drive ‘heave and surge’ energy capture design to extract twice the energy from ocean waves as other devices in its class. The prototype SeaRay is undergoing tests in Seattle’s Puget Sound, where it is returning data for analysis by its Corvallis, Oregon maker Columbia Power Technologies. Not only can the SeaRay wave-driven power generator tap the full energy potential of passing waves, its sturdy design makes it able to withstand harsh seas.

After completing initial SeaRay sea trials, researchers at Oregon State University will continue to work with Columbia Power Technologies to improve the generator’s direct-drive system design. The company expects to eventually deploy SeaRay wave-driven power generators one to three miles offshore, where wave energy is greatest.
