'Safe Slice' Kitchenware Teaches Kids About Portion Control

It's important that kids get started early in learning healthy food preparation, and 'Safe Slice,' a graduate design project from Katrina Steven of the University of Dundee, aims to do just that. The kit comes with tools and fact sheets to get kids cooking with their families in a safe environment.

Part of the problem with teaching young children to cook is that food preparation is dangerous. It frequently involves sharp edges and hot surfaces that kids have little experience dealing with. Safe Slice makes cooking safer by providing cutting guides and safety knives that kids can use with minimal risk. The knife in particular is designed to allow kids to cut without it being too sharp, with a handle that forces one's hand into the proper knife grip.

Beyond safety, Safe Slice is concerned with teaching kids about proper portion sizes and healthy eating. It includes simple, intuitive instruction cards that help to pass along that information.
