Community-Boosting Canopies

Roberto Scaia Uses Simplistic White Covers to Transform a Public Space

Robert Scaia has designed a new public space for an underdeveloped neighborhood in Bueno Aires, Argentina. The design is intended to gather space for the local community to promenade, relax, perform, and even kayak. Placed under two elevated highways, the design is an open space naturally divided by existing highway beams. It will consist of a series of simply paved grounds completed with chairs and carefully landscaped beds. Running through the area will be a stream of water.

The space will use a series of white covers to create an intimate feel and separate the highly trafficked pedestrian area from the highway above. Scaia incorporates the use of these large, curved covers in a unique and highly deliberate manner. In addition, the covers are recyclable and large in scale, hence creating a sustainable design visible in the cityscape.
