In designing her collection of resin furniture, Design Academy Eindhoven graduate Wiktoria Szawiel wished to epitomize the moods and materials of the eastern European landscapes she once called home.
The Polish designer explains, "I wanted to capture the beauty and the spirituality of an eastern landscape within a physical object. I tried to translate different aspects of landscape into materials, colors, techniques and shapes."
Her experimental efforts included casting plants and grasses in resin, creating a fossilized aesthetic that combines natural and artificial elements. The final pieces included wicker, rattan and wooden structures, set in resin, which were sanded to reveal the intertwined fibers within. The resin ratio for each piece differs, creating various textures and opacities. The collection includes chairs, stools and tables, but will later be expanded to vases and containers.
