Irene Roca Moracia Offers Furniture Made Out of Construction Waste

The often wasteful construction industry is critiqued by Irene Roca Moracia's repurposed construction waste furniture. Using discarded building materials, Moracia has created a unique collection of modular furniture, which she describes as "technically illegal."

The project named Appropriating the Grid consists of 11 repurposed objects that range in functions from storage to seating. Most of the discarded material used for Moracia's modular furniture was left completely unused by suppliers because they no longer conformed to the European Union's Construction Products Regulation upon arrival at various construction sites.

Moracia's repurposing project comes after two years of research on construction waste. She found that most discarded materials are hazardous and that many construction companies and suppliers don't have recycling programs for these materials. Instead, they get piled up in the countrysides as litter.
