The Urbach Tower is Self-Twisted and is Built in the Rems Valley

The University of Stuttgart debuts the Urbach Tower in the Rems Valley. Erected for the Remstal Garden Show, the behavior of the construction material is what makes this project quite innovative. The engineers who built the Urbach Tower -- students and faculty from the institution's Institute for Computational Design and Construction and the Institute for Building Structures and Structural Design, tapped the "natural shrinking process of wood [...] to create this world-first self-twisted tower in Germany."

Spanning 14 meters in height, the wooden tower in the Rems Valley is created through a non-energy-intensive process that requires the engineers to predict how the wood will shrink. Thereafter, the wood is arranged in a shape that will allow it to create a wholesome end product.
