The MADONNA Editorial Hints at Various Religious Undertones

Titled 'MADONNA,' this vibrant editorial for GLASSbook Magazine has several obvious religious undertones. The title depicts the Virgin Mary in Christian art, but the elaborately colored photos look nothing like a typical religious portrait.

Through the model's attire, poses and props, an obvious monastic aura is delivered. But instead of the traditional white cloth, the model is wearing lavishly embellished crowns on her head. This reminds us more of Elizabethan royalty, but the model contradicts this with jewelry with crosses and beads that look like rosaries and a heart-shaped prop that looks like it could be a red apple.

Her poses are mixed-signalling as well -- in some, she puts her hands together like Mary, whereas in others, she is posed like Buddha with one hand up in the air. The photos are intriguing because they are truly up for interpretation. They were shot by Jason Setiawan and styled by Leonid Gurevich.
