Jaime Hayon's New 'Frame' Collection Looks Retro But Feels Modern

Putting rattan furniture back on the design radar, designer extraordinaire Jaime Hayon has designed a 'Frames' collection for Expormim at Milan Design Week 2014.

The Spanish designer's new rattan furniture collection includes an armchair, a room divider and a side table. Giving rattan a makeover both functionally and visually, Hayon skillfully updates the classical use of rattan to curve it via heat to mold it in the way this craftsmen sees fit; he also reworks how rattan is made to simplify the process itself and play around with the structure.

The end result is contemporary-looking wicker frames that pay homage to classical braiding and give the collection its achingly hipster look. Even though the collection looks authentically retro, with Hayon's modern techniques, the collection feels new and comfy.
