Last November, Ottawa police invited residents to donate hygiene products for people in need through an initiative called Purse Project. The annual initiative was first launched in 2018 and aims to assist women who can't afford monthly expenses for such items.
With the rising cost of goods, the initiative expected more women to encounter difficulties in accessing hygiene products last year. The campaign welcomed donations of sanitary and hygiene products like menstrual pads, tampons, soap, toothpaste, deodorant, shampoo, and even items for men.
Donations were collected until December 11 at Ottawa Police Service sites, Shoppers Drug Mart locations, and the Citron Hygiene warehouse. The items were then distributed to local shelters like the Minwaashin Lodge, Youth Services Bureau, Nelson House, and Cornerstone Housing -- providing an opportunity for the community to support those in need with essential hygiene supplies.
