Daniel Arsham and Pharrell's collaboration is a set of keyboard sculptures that explores the "petrification of contemporary objects." Arsham has recreated Pharrell’s first instrument – the Casio MT-500 – in various substances, including volcanic ash, steel and crystal. The replicas are meant to evoke an archaeological vibe as if they have been dug up in the future. The sculptures show signs of intricately detailed wear and tear, which completes the long-lost-relic aesthetic Arsham was going for.
Although the instrument is a very personal item to Pharrell, the pieces arouse a childlike nostalgia. The pieces were unveiled at The Standard Hotel after a preview on Instagram, and viewers were even allowed to interact with the piece, touching and holding it with the protection of gloves.
