Revealing Police Photography

These Photos Capture Pasadena Police Department Officers in the 1980s

The Pasadena Police Department was a central part of the life of Newport Beach-based photographer William Valentine, seeing as how his father worked in the department. By the age of eight, Valentine had been on board a life-threatening call and witnessed a dead man whisked away by ambulance after an overdose of drugs.

When Valentine was in school in the 1980s, he received unprecedented access to the Pasadena Police Department thanks to his father's connections. Over time, he gained the trust of his subjects and was allowed to photograph them as they went about busting drug dealers and gang-bangers.

Valentine eventually decided to become a police officer himself and after a few years on the job, began to take photographs of police work.
