Digital Starting Pistols

The Omega Electronic Beeper Reduces Errors in Timing

Much has changed for the Olympics since the first modern games were held in 1896 and now London has changed another tradition; in place of the iconic starting pistol, people will be sounding an Omega electronic beeper. The reason for this change is the concern that the starting pistol is too slow. According to Dvice, traveling at about 768 miles per hour, the sound of the bang will reach competitors in the lanes closest to the starter a few milliseconds before those in the farthest. By using the Omega electronic beeper, officials of the Olympics hope to solve that problem.

The Omega electronic beeper happens to look like a pistol, except that it doesn't make a sound. Instead, it sends a beep to speakers behind each lane for equal sound distribution.
