Despite their eccentricity, it seems appropriate that eggs, a symbol traditionally associated with Easter and religion, be used to create representations of celebrated religious figures -- as is the case with these breathtaking mosaic artworks by Russian artist Oksana Mas.
The elements that make up these artworks require a true visionary. The piece functions almost as a puzzle, as each egg had to be painted and designed uniquely, yet fit into the larger image being portrayed.
And this is not the first time the talented Oksana has created an egg-centric masterpiece. In January 2010, she debuted an unusual portrait of the Virgin Mary using 15,000 painted wooden easter eggs.
The mind-blowing exhibit is called Post-vs-Proto-Renaissance and features 12 separate pieces. Incredibly enough, the portraits required 3.64 million wooden eggs to complete, all hand-painted by people in 42 different countries.
According to Oddity Central, "From inmates to intellectuals, thousands of people from all walks of life painted the eggs which were later assembled by Oksana, in her studio. The gigantic egg mosaics are currently on display inside the Church of San Fantin, in Venice."
