Police-Issue Smartphones

NYPD Officers Will Receive Windows Phones When They Join the Force

Fighting crime is today's age takes more than just a badge and a uniform, and so the NYPD has decided to outfit its officers with an essential modern tool: the smartphone. Each and every officer in the NYPD -- the largest police force in the United States -- will now receive a special Windows Phone loaded with police-issue software to make law enforcement faster and more efficient.

Though all NYPD officers will get a work phone, the specific type of phone itself varies between the Lumia 830 and the Lumia 640 XL. The NYPD chose these phones because they have worked with Microsoft, the manufacturer, to create a suite of policing apps. These include an app to let officers access the NYPD's criminal database remotely (rather than having to go back to the station to use a computer) and a 911 app that lets officers receive emergency calls directly.
