Gluck+ Built a Storm-Resistant North Carolina Research Laboratory

This North Carolina research laboratory by US architectural firm Gluck+ was built to be completely weatherproof and storm-resistant. The building is a part of the Marine Lab campus of Duke University and the facility was "completed on a 'fixed and modest' budget." The building's geometrically stacked structure, materials and strategically asymmetric arrangement are design elements that were chosen for their ability to withstand hurricane-level force winds, flooding and storm surges.

Inside, the North Carolina research laboratory has distinct zones for socializing, office spaces and of course, labs for research and scientific development. The heart of the ground floor operates on an open concept with a space dubbed 'Collisional Commons'—an area "where ideas from researchers are meant to 'collide informally.'"
