Six of former president Richard Nixon’s love letters are set to be released at The Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum. The exchanges between Nixon and wife Patricia Ryan capture the progression of a budding romance that began in 1938.
The release of Nixon’s love letters coincides with Ryan’s 100th birthday. Although the iconic political figure remains for the most part heavily associated with scandal, the amorous notes reveal deep emotion and unmistakable compassion.
Adding to the demystification of Nixon is evidence of artistic merit. The spark that would grow between the partners began on the set of a local theater in Southern California where the two were auditioning for an upcoming play. The letters indicate that like their meeting, there is more to Richard Nixon than what the public tends to let on.
