Irish-born artist Nigel Cox specializes in using thin layers of oil paint to develop depth and detail, while bringing life to his portraits of the diverse group of average, everyday people he features.
Cox was first bitten by the art bug when he embarked on the grueling Transglobe Expedition after graduating college. The three-year, 100,000 mile trip provided Nigel Cox with overwhelming solitude, which allowed him to revel in the stunning natural beauty of the many vast and barren spaces the Transglobe Expedition brought him through. Soon after, he began to sketch places of interest in his diary. The influence of empty surroundings is still very evident in his work.
"The figures are alone but not lonely," Nigel Cox said of his paintings. "Searching but not anxious, anticipating, yet calm. They have an inner peace and strength and are at one with their surroundings."
