The New York Fulton Street Station Provides Commuters with Natural Light

Since most subway stops are subterranean, it is needless to say that they are dark and gloomy; the New York Fulton Street Station hopes to change that perception. It is currently being revamped to allow a flood of natural light to stream onto the platform. This illuminating feat will be achieved via the construction of an impressive eight foot glass dome.

A collaborative design between engineering group Arup, Grimshaw Architects and James Carpenter Design Associates, the New York Fulton Street Station will incorporate an intricate 70-foot cabling system suspended from an "oculus ring" at the top in order to hold the glass structure. With nearly 1,000 aluminum panels covering the inside surface, light will be reflected down to commuters from the outside. The use of natural light hopes to create a sense of connectedness.
