The Fifth Culinary Taste- Umami

New Taste

You've tasted sweet, sour, bitter and salty...and now a fifth culinary element is being sold in Waitrose! Umami (meaning 'deliciousness' in Japanese) has been dubbed 'Taste Number 5' and is being sold in a paste form to be used by the experimental cooks among us. But Umami is more familiar than you might think; seaweed, parmesan cheese, anchovies and porcini mushrooms are all rich in Umami!

Although the new taste was first discovered over 100 years ago this is the first time that it has graced shelves in the UK!
