Musically Communicative Computers

The MUSICA Project is Developing Computers That Improvise Jazz

The MUSICA project is an initiative that is looking to develop a computer that is capable of communicating with people through the medium of jazz music, improvising and composing jazz in real time. The project is a part of DARPA's Communicating with Computers (CwC) program, which looks to open up new avenues toward robot communication skills.

The computer system uses a database of jazz solos that are computationally analyzed using image schema, a method of understanding the world through spatial concepts. The second part of the MUSICA project is a setup that allows the computer to analyze what someone is playing, understanding things like harmony, rhythm, pitch and beat, before responding musically.

The ultimate goal of this project is to make it possible for humans to enjoy musical communication with computers.
