Modular Handbag Designs

Engineer Eliana Ghantous Created the Ultra-Customizable 'Modjewel'

Modjewel—a play on the word "module"—is a new start-up from nanotechnology engineer Eliana Ghantous that reimagines the classic handbag as an ultra-customizable, portable storage solution.

Since small clutch bags are typically only used for some special occasions, Ghantous set out to create a design that could be customized to better suit one's closet. Modjewel introduces a basic, rectangular metal 'Bare Bag' that can be enhanced with the front and back covers of one's choosing, plus interchangeable clasps and straps. Some of the cover options include solid leather in different colors, as well as snakeskin, faceted leather and gemstone leather finishes.

Like Modjewel, a number of brands are experimenting with the idea of empowering consumers to invest in products that can be highly customized for daily life, as well as special events and occasions.
