Mobile Self-Checkouts

Diebold Proposes a Scan-As-You-Shop Process to Streamline the Activity

Lineups at the store -- any store -- may soon be a thing of the past if a mobile self-checkout is introduced. Proposed by Diebold, a financial innovations firm, the process is quite simple. It utilizes the smartphone almost everyone owns and allows people to scan as they shop using a retailer's app so that a tab is already created by the time they reach the till.

With the mobile self-checkout system, people can still pay with cash before leaving the store, or with cards or even through the specific app. Frank Natoli, Diebold VP, says, "A convergence of the ATM, self-checkout and mobile would not only deliver speed and convenience to consumers, but also standardizes all cash handling into a single automated experience."
