'Minute of Silence' Challenges Phone Users to Pay Their Respects

Although the tradition of observing a minute of silence after a tragedy is still respected in person, it's more difficult to slow down the constant chatter online. This year has been a particularly difficult one for Malaysia, especially relating to MH370 and MH17.

This year, on Malaysia's National Mourning Day, the 'Minute of Silence' campaign was set up, challenging mobile phone users to honor the victims of both tragedies by not taking any calls, emails, messages for a whole minute. By visiting the Minute of Silence campaign site, users are asked to switch their phones over to airplane mode, which starts a countdown from 60 seconds. As a result, thousands of people from all over the world gave up a minute to remember lives lost.
