Vibrant Surrealist Comics

Michael DeForge Brings His Unique Imagination to Comic Panels

When I’m in need of inspiration, I like to look at surrealist art, and these comic panels by Michael DeForge are hitting me in just the right way to spark my imagination.

It’s easy to see Pierre La Police’s influence in these Michael DeForge comic panels, but I’m also getting a strong Robert Crumb vibe from Michael DeForge’s use of weird and disturbing proportions. You can see this most prominently in DeForge’s comic ‘Queen’, in which he details the transformation of an amorphous glob into a makeshift human being. If that sounded strange, looking at the images doesn’t necessarily help much. Michael DeForge’s use of unsaturated, but lively colors also keep my eyes busy and interested in what’s going on in each panel.

If you’re a fan of these Michael DeForge panels, you should check out more of his work in the ongoing comic series ‘Lose’, published by Koyama Press.
