These Paintings by M.F. Husain Showcase the Rich Culture of India

When he was alive, M.F. Husain was one of the world's most controversial painters, his interpretations of Indian culture captivating and offending people in equal measure. Now, the first public exhibition of his nine final paintings is set to ensure that the controversy will continue even if Husain himself is no longer alive.

The 'Indian Civilisation' series will be exhibited at London's prestigious Victoria and Albert Museum from May 28 to July 27. The collection will showcase M.F. Husain's unmatched ability to visually capture the richness of Indian culture and history. Eight of the paintings depict India's vibrant cities, colorful Hindu festivals, icons and historic events. The ninth is a painting of the Hindu elephant deity Ganesh. The paintings were commissioned by the family of London-based Indian business tycoon Lakshmi Mittal.

In the past, M.F. Husain has angered Hindus for his controversial interpretations of Hindu deities. He permanently left India in 2006 as a result.
