Posture-Improving Curved Seats

Masahiko Ito Designs the Saddle Seat to Maximize Concentration

Masahiko Ito is a graduate of the Kingston School of Art and his recent project is entitled the 'Saddle Seat.' The furniture piece is designed to be used in schools for children with the structure that assists in reducing fidgeting habits, encouraging concentration, and improving posture. Visually, it boasts a thin and narrow form that resembles the looks of a horse saddle. Ito wanted to balance out design with physical and mental sensibilities.

He noticed that children naturally want to fidget and sway away from sitting still, and reflecting occurs when reclined. The Saddle seat is designed to encourage an upright seating position to defer from reclining and direct concentration. The chair is constructed from three components in total -- there is the back, the seat, and the frame, all of which have been chosen to have the lowest amount of carbon footprint and waste.

The frame is crafted from a steel tube in either a pink, blue or orange finish. The chair is constructed from a birch plywood with an oil finish, and the back is a solid timber cylinder tube.
