Half Chinese Half Black Lou Jing Ignites Controversy in China

A half Chinese, half black woman has kindled a race debate in China. 20-year old Lou Jing, a Shanghainese woman, who was raised by her Chinese mother and speaks and acts like any other Chinese girl rapped on-stage during a reality performance program.

This act stirred an enormous of admiration and, also, disgusting prejudice. The show’s presenters nicknamed Lou Jing, "chocolate girl," a term meant in endearment. On the Internet people called Lou Jing gross and ugly and chided her mother for having sex out of wedlock and with a black man.

Lou Jing never knew her father, and in an interview with NPR’s All Things Considered, she says: "I’ve always thought of myself as Shanghainese, but after the competition I started to have doubts about who I really am."
