'Life After' Details Prison Tattoo Culture in South Africa

'Life After,' photographed by Araminta de Cermont, follows the lives of individuals who were all gang members and have been victims or perpetrators of gang violence during their time in prison. This photo exploration digs into the lives of participants of a South African prison gang that has only recently been released back into society after serving many years in jail.

The South African prison system punishes tattooing by means of legal as well as physical action, but the prisoners find a way around this. They have largely created their own brandishing equipment using whatever tools they can scrounge together. Each tattoo is different, illustrating the hierarchy of the gang members or simply personal statements. Araminta de Cermont makes viewers think with the 'Life After' collection and she makes a valid reflection on how she "also found (her)self wondering how it would be if we all had our past mistakes permanently emblazoned across our faces."
