To celebrate Alan Turing's hundredth birthday, Jeroen van den Bos and Davy Landman from Centrum Wiskunde & Informatica have built a working LEGO Turing Machine.
Alan Turing is considered the father of artificial intelligence. His most famous creation, the Turing machine, was designed to see if a machine could exhibit human-like behavior without human detection, thus proving the existence of artificial intelligence. In this case, the LEGO Turing machine was made to be tamper-proof so that it may be displayed during a commemorative exhibit without being altered. Unlike the actual machine that was used in the 1950s, the LEGO version has limited tape, which means it has a limited set of instructions, consequently restricting the level of intelligence this item can exhibit.
