Boldly Accented Architecture

The Kutaisi Airport's Structural Feature Symbolizes Internal Tension

The Kutaisi Airport in Georgia is a low-level mass with a horizontal emphasis and facades of expansive windows. Based on this description, it has a great deal in common with many of the contemporary air terminals throughout the world. What this one does incorporate, however, are eccentric aesthetic and structural features that contribute to the look and the functionality of the building.

UNStudio strove to highlight the points where the circulation becomes tense, inside and outside of the building. With this continuous push and pull of opposing inbound and outbound traffic of plane and passenger arrivals and departures, the designers hoped to keep everything in efficient flux. A sunken webbed ceiling inside ensures that pedestrian flow does not clash; meanwhile, the abstract red outer corner of the Kutaisi Airport pinpoints the best view of aircraft coming and going.
Trend Themes
1. Eccentric Architecture - The fusion of unique aesthetics with functional features disrupts traditional design practices.
2. Tension-driven Design - Highlighting points of tension can contribute to the efficiency and flow of a built environment.
3. Seamless Circulation - Designing spaces that mitigate pedestrian flow clashes can lead to improved operational efficiency.
Industry Implications
1. Aerospace - Innovative aviation terminals could enhance the overall passenger experience.
2. Architecture - Incorporating unique structural features to buildings could lead to more visually interesting and functional designs.
3. Transportation - Designing structures that prioritize efficient passenger flow could improve the functionality of mass transport terminals.
