These oil rig homes would house a mixture of scientists and regular people and would be nearly self-sufficient. Kee and Wern want to retrofit the oil rigs with technology that will help them produce their own power, like wind turbines and solar panels. The rigs would be split into two levels with research labs below water and living and recreational facilities above.
What I like about this idea is that it probably wouldn't cost a ton of money to execute, and it would help the environment. There are thousands of abandoned oil rigs all around the world that could potentially start leaking oil at any time. Turning those oil rigs into sustainable communities would prevent that from happening and encourage people to live greener.
