Autonomous Packing Robots

Amazon is Using Kiva Robots to Help Fulfil Your Online Orders

Amazon is using a battalion of Kiva robots in its fulfillment centers to increase product-packing productivity. The Kiva mobile fulfillment system is claimed to have 2-4 times the packing productivity of other packing methods, and helps streamline fulfillment and logistics processes.

Rather than send individual employees around the warehouse to collect items from shelves -- a time-consuming process -- the Kiva robots transports mobile shelves to the picking station. A laser points out where the item is located on the shelf, and the human picker scans it for confirmation before grouping it with other items in the order.

The robots are low enough that they can move beneath the mobile shelves, from where they can pick the units off the ground for transportation. They are connected to wireless networks and use floor-embedded barcodes for navigation.
