According to the site, 500 million phone books are printed each year, many of which are ultimately discarded. That's 19 million harvested trees, 1.6 billion pounds of paper, 268,000 cubic yards of landfill, and 3.2 billion kilowatt hours of electricity. While the phone book industry does promote recycling their books, Yellow Pages Goes Green points out that recycling books that were unwanted in the first place is still a waste of resources.
