High School Student Kai Kloepfer Invented This Biometric Smart Gun

Based out of Boulder, Colorado, Kai Kloepfer recently received $50,000 in grant money for winning first prize in the Smart Tech for Firearms Challenge, which brings innovation to gun safety. The high schooler's contribution integrated biometric user authentication to his gun prototype, meaning it requires the correct fingerprint to fire. Part of his prize money has already been allocated to 3D printing parts of his prototype.

A user ID locks in the fingerprint of the only people allowed to use the gun. This information is not uploaded anywhere else and is stored in the gun, making it very difficult to hack. This also indicates potential military applications in addition to commercial use. Kai Kloepfer has expressed an interest in information security.
