These Joshua M. Smith Illustrations are Menacing and Majestic

In his most recent work, Orlando-based artist Joshua M. Smith uses a halftone technique to render menacing beasts with an impressive amount of detail. Lions have adorned countless flags and coats of arms almost since humans began making such things. And it is no wonder why. The big cats are some of the most powerful, majestic and ferocious beasts in the animal kingdom. These qualities are brought to bear in the illustrations featured here.

Interestingly, the dotted, mostly monochromatic halftone technique employed by Smith actually highlights the aforementioned qualities of his muses rather than subdue or soften them. A small but important detail of his renderings are the eyes -- they are without pupils. This evokes a merciless quality in the animals. One is glad to be looking at just pictures of them rather than the real deal.
