Jay Wilson Creates Stunning Art Out of Humble Materials

Jay Wilson proves yet again the versatility of toothpicks and matchsticks. Unlike Scott Weaver’s San Francisco toothpick city or Pei-San Ng’s matchstick typography, Jay Wilson has combined the two to create nature-inspired images of moose. Both simple and intricate, the wall-mounted sculptures have an embroidery-like aesthetic that gives each piece a crafty vibe.

Born and raised in Toronto, Canada, Jay Wilson’s work has predominantly been shown in his home country including Montreal and Ottawa. Using glue and T-pins to put together his sculptures, Jay Wilson explains, "The work is complex in arrangement and involves simultaneous contrast and communication between cultural references, composition, scope and tempo of process."

Jay Wilson is a full-time professor by day and a talented artist by night.
