Denis Jaffré's Jabeprode Trap Contains Murder Hornets in a Safe Box

Denis Jaffré created the Jabeprode Trap to solve France's murder hornet problem. Having theoretically arrived in France from a pottery shipment sometime in 2004, the dangerous creatures have no natural predators in the region, making them an invasive species.

The French beekeeper created a DIY-style solution in 2016. The Jabeprode prototype was made out of plywood and is now sold and produced commercially. Its upgraded structure consists of an injection-molded crate with openings on the short sides. Mounted funnels are perforated with specifically sized apertures in the openings. Using honeycombs for bait, the murder hornets fly through the funnels and are trapped inside, unable to access the bait. Smaller insects that may accidentally find their way inside can escape via the perforations in the crate.
