Kenya Lit the Largest Ever Ivory Bonfire in Order to Save Their Elephants

In an effort to save their country's elephant population and send a clear message to poachers, the Kenyan government burned their surplus ivory in an enormous ivory bonfire.

According to National Geographic, the burning of Kenya's ivory stockpile today is the largest burn ever in history. Gathered from smugglers, approximately 150 tons of elephant tusks from an estimated 6700 elephants were set on fire -- the value of which is speculated to be more than $100 million. Rhino horn is also being included in the ivory bonfire.

Although the decision to torch the ivory surplus is controversial, President Uhuru Kenyatta stated "I would rather wait for judgment from future generations who I'm sure will respect the decision we have made today."
