Remember iPods? Seems that the "old" technology of yesterday has a new life as a medical devide. Not sure that I would want my orthopedic surgeon using an iPod to navigate around my joints in surgery, but this is exactly what Smith and Nephew propose with their Dash system based on the iPod.
Brainlab has devised a concept for the ubiquitous iPod, which they say will give surgeons greater accuracy when whacking off bones in hips and knees to replace them with metal and plastic. The interface between Brainlab and the receiver is the iPod touch with its handy touchscreen. It works wirelessly to transmit guidance throughout the procedure. The Dash can make minute adjustments to the surgical instruments to make the operation a precision procedure.
I'm thinking that the iPod is a much better choice than the iPhone. Who wants a doc tempted by Angry Birds or Twitter?
