Nikki Taylor, Trend Hunter (INTERVIEW)

Taylor Explains the Creativity Behind Interactive Art Ideas

Former Editorial Intern Nikki Taylor's favorite trend is a large interconnected adult play gym, which provides great stimulation for interactive art ideas. Aside from finding inspiration in this art form, Taylor also finds inspiring and creative minds all over the city of Toronto. Though working at Trend Hunter was completely out her comfort zone, she is now ecstatic she decided to go for the internship because of the ongoing support, encouragement and sense of community that the office provided.

How do you define cool?

I would say cool is subjective. It's your niche, whatever you're into that will come up with a definition of what you think is cool.

What is your favorite trend and why?

My favorite trend is interactive art ideas. I have a perfect example of what I'm talking about right here. Basically what's happening is there is this giant web of interlocking plastic, made to look like fabric that's all woven together and people can climb on it, they can play on it and they can lay under it. The artist encourages the public to join in and just enjoy themselves. It's kind of like a big playground where you get to feel like you're a kid again. This all took place in California in the space of the library.

What inspires or excites you?

What I would say inspires me is seeing creativitiy out on the streets. Someone painting on the sidewalk or someone banging on the drums and playing the didgeridoo at the same time. That to me is a phenomenal thing. Something that you see in the city almost everyday, so that's always a thrill.

What's your favorite accomplishment?

My favorite accomplishment is tied between graduating from university at York with an English degree and getting to be an intern at Trend Hunter. Mainly because it was so outside of my comfort zone and I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to succeed. I found the more I became involved with the environment, the more I felt at home and I'm really happy that I actually got to intern here.

Predict something awesome for 2020?

A trend I see in the future is virtual reality. I definitely think that's coming, maybe next year, you never know. It's going to be here people so get ready.

What is your favorite part about working at Trend Hunter?

My favorite thing about working at Trend Hunter is that everybody is so supportive and you really feel like they genuinely care whether or not you succeed. At the end of the day we'll say how many trends we've got to and everyone will pump you up whether you did your goal or you didn't. You feel like these people are here to help you improve.

What advice would you give to the business world?

My advice to the business world would be to expand your horizons and look outside of normal hiring websites. Instead of going to Workopolis, check out Etsy.com because there are a lot of people doing amazing things that you would have never thought of before.

Any last thoughts you'd like to share about Trend Hunter?

I love being here at Trend Hunter because it allows me to be that red parasol out of all the black ones walking down the street.
