Furniture-Building Robots

Scientists at NTU Built an IKEA-Building Robot to Handle Furniture

Assembling furniture can be a painful mixture of blood, sweat and tears, but two scientists from Singapore's Nanyang Technological University have made the process pain-free with their IKEA-building robot. While the robot can currently only build a single IKEA chair, it does show potential advancements in robotics especially in the field of robotic AI. The team behind the IKEA building robot is currently looking to integrate further AI into the robot with the hopes that it can one day build furniture without user input.

The robot was under development for the past three years, and currently consists of two arms and a 3D camera. The camera is used to read the furniture parts presented to it, while the arms feature impressive actuation to construct the pieces. The current IKEA-building robot can complete a chair in about 20 minutes -- it generally takes a human 10 minutes to complete the chair -- with the hopes that this speed will be raised with further developments.
