Scent-Infused Television

The IEEE Virtual Reality Orlando Conference Unveils Novel Shows

Japanese scholars at the Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology have unveiled a scent-infused television concept by way of Orlando's IEEE Virtual Reality conference.

According to the designers, the desire for a smell-infused screen has been around since the time of the early 1990s, hence the 'smelling screen.'

While the screen plays, the LCD piece works with four fans that move according to modulated speeds. Hydrogel aroma chips emit specific scents that are triggered with heat and vapor.

The process is made to look seamless, giving off the impression of smells that match exactly what is being displayed on the television sets. While the project is still in its developmental stages, it may soon take hold.
