Icon Iconoclast by Beezy Bailey Embraces Liberty and Madiba's Leg

If you have no idea who Madiba is, he is the father of a free South Africa, the country’s biggest living icon, and Icon Iconoclast by Beezy Bailey presents his journey and legacy in a series of vibrant paintings.

Breezy’s series is inspired by the silkscreen images by Andy Warhol of popular icons like Marilyn Monroe. Combing wild paint styles and the South African rainbow nation concept, Breezy captures Madiba in a chain of unique images. From Madiba being portrayed in multiple colors to standing in his famous boxing stance outside Robben Island prison, the paintings bring inspiring messages and will be showcased at the Everard Read Gallery in Johannesburg from May 5 to June 16, 2011.

The photographs used are those taken by Bob Gosani before Madiba’s imprisonment, and by Benny Gool, taken after his release.
