The Hollow Flashlight is impressive for a number of reasons. Namely, that it was created by a 15 year old whiz hailing from Victoria, British Colombia, Canada, and that it harnesses the heat from human hands to light up.
The brainchild of Ann Makosinski, the Hollow Flashlight was created in collaboration with St. Michaels University School in Canada. Inspired by the idea of Peltier tiles, which create energy when one side is heated while the other side is cooled, the Hollow Flashlight cost only $26 to make. She paired the tiles with a store-bought circuit, PCV pipe and aluminum.
Makosinski has been chosen as one of 15 finalists for Google’s global science fair thanks to her invention of the Hollow Flashlight.
