This High-Speed Optical Fiber Offers Revolutionary Potential

A team of scientists and engineers spanning across the globe have demonstrated the abilities of a high-speed optical fiber that is as thin as a human hair and recently showcased the ability to be able to set a new record for speed of transmission.

The research team, which included members from Australia, Italy, Japan and the Netherlands, made use of the latest and greatest optics research, tweaking variables such as polarization, color and light coherence in order to achieve phenomenal results. The outcome was a high-speed optical fiber comprising as many as 19 cores, each of which is capable of transmitting signals at a rate of 1.7 petabits per second across a distance of around 67 kilometers.

A key element of the optical fiber's performance was its glass chip, created at Macquarie University.

Going forward, this optical fiber offers promise across a number of diverse applications ranging from medical research to space exploration.
