Mood-Altering Mirrors

The Incendiary Reflection is a High-Tech Mirror That Alters Emotions

The Incendiary Reflection project aims to change your mood by showing you an altered reflection of yourself in a high-tech mirror. University of Tokyo student Shigeo Yoshida worked with a team to create the mirror in an attempt to subtly change the emotions of users. Incendiary reflection takes your image and spits it back with slight changes.

The mirror changes your expression and shows it to you as if it were your actual reflection. By showing you an image of yourself with a different emotion, them mirror is able to make you slowly change your mood to match the mirror. According to the Facial Feedback Hypothesis, our emotions change to match physical facial muscle movements.

Incendiary Reflection was presented at the 2013 SIGGRAPH conference in Anaheim, California.
